New Delhi, 19 September—In a big jolt to the Congress, the RSS’s student organisation the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), today bagged three of the four panel posts in the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) elections 2026, while an independent candidate secured the vice president’s post and the NSUI losing all the posts.
In a closely contested elections, Yash Dabas of the ABVP was elected president with 24,576 votes, defeating NSUI candidate Vijay Shankar Meena, who polled 22,523 votes. The ABVP’s Riya Chhawdi defeated her NSUI rival Namrata Chaudhary to secure Secretary’s post.
A three-way contest was seen for the Joint Secretary’s post between the ABVP, NSUI and SCB.
Independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen won the vice president’s post, defeating his ABVP rival Ishu Maurya. NSUI candidate Vir Chatrath finished a distant third.
Yash Dabas, who won the President’s seat, said that it is a victory of harmony, patriotism, and the collective strength of the Sangh.
“Students from institutions ranging from PU to DU have worked to ensure our victory. NSUI has been completely wiped out from the campus; NSUI lost 4:0, he said.
Dabas said his panel will ensure safety audit of every PG and hostel in the wake of recent Satya Narayan PG collapse.
“Our primary concern will be ensuring that a safety audit is conducted for every PG and hostel. We all witnessed the accident that occurred in Satya Niketan; we do not want such an incident to happen to anyone in the future, and that will be our first priority—conducting safety audits for every college, hostel, and PG,” he said.
ABVP’s Riya Chhawdi, who won the Secretary’s seat is the only woman in the DUSU panel.
Speaking to reporters after the results were declared, Chhawdi said she is “overjoyed” by the victory.
“As the only woman candidate, I am ready to do everything within my power for the students during my tenure,” she said.
Thanking the students for placing their trust in the ABVP, she said, her main task would be to ensure women’s safety in the Delhi University campuses.
“We are a student organization. We do not focus on political agendas; our goal is to resolve students’ issues. That is why the students placed their trust in us—resulting in ABVP winning three seats. First and foremost, I always emphasize that women’s safety will be my top priority. Beyond that, we are fully committed to fulfilling everything outlined in our manifesto -whether it concerns women’s safety, audits of PGs (paying guest accommodations), or campus security,” she said.
Congratulating ABVP candidates on their victory, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said that the DUSU results said that the students have spoken “loud and clear”
Observers said that the DUSU’s election results clearly reflect that youth in the national capital is sharply divided and recent youth protests across the country have not impacted the hold of the RSS on its followers.
