NEW DELHI: A day after Chief Justice of India denied the Supreme Court’s nod to form 6 on online voter regisstration form, the Election Commission on Tuesday withdrew the additional special intensive revision (SIR) declaration in states and union territories where the revision exercise has concluded.
• The extra lineage and ancestry declaration—which asked applicants to link themselves or their parents/grandparents to past electoral rolls—was removed from the ECINET portal, app, and Chief Electoral Officer portals for non-SIR and completed regions.
• Where It Remains Active: The additional declaration is still required in states where the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise is actively underway.
• Standard Form Reinstated: First-time and new applicants in regions where the exercise is finished now only need to complete the regular, statutory Form 6 governed by the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960.
• Internal Objections: The rollback followed internal scrutiny and objections from Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, who questioned whether modifying the digital application process without formal rule amendments under the law was appropriate.
• Supreme Court Stance: The Supreme Court of India, during hearings addressing petitions against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, clarified that any alterations to statutory forms must follow proper legislative processes rather than unilateral administrative changes, requesting official records from the Election Commission of India.
• EC Removes Unapproved SIR Declaration from Voter Form 6 on ECINET
Action: Election Commission removed the unapproved Special Intensive Revision (SIR) declaration from Form 6 on the ECINET portal.
