NEW DELHI: As Bihar heads into the first phase of polling within hours, the political atmosphere remains tense and fluid across key constituencies. While the focus is naturally on the fierce contest between the NDA and the Mahagathbandhan, political ripples are being felt far beyond Bihar’s borders — particularly in Andhra Pradesh, where TDP supremo and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is watching developments with intense scrutiny.
According to sources within the Telugu Desam Party, Naidu is personally reviewing political feedback from Bihar, fully aware that the outcome may have national implications. With 16 Lok Sabha MPs, the TDP is a crucial NDA ally in Delhi and a key pillar in the Modi-led coalition government. Insiders admit that a poor performance by the BJP in Bihar could complicate BJP’s national political equilibrium — and by extension, TDP’s position within the alliance.
Naidu’s concern is not about ideological shifts but rather the political stability that directly impacts Andhra Pradesh’s financial prospects. After returning to power in May 2024 with a commanding majority, Naidu has been pressing the Union Government for substantial financial assistance to revive the state’s ailing economy. With Andhra Pradesh grappling with a severe resource crunch and ambitious development commitments at hand, Naidu is keen to avoid any disruption to the existing power arrangements at the Centre.
“Even if the BJP faces a setback in Bihar, Naidu will not withdraw support under any circumstances,” a high-level TDP source said. “His priority is securing financial backing and ensuring smooth coordination with the Centre.”
However, Naidu’s calculation extends beyond the BJP alone. He is also closely monitoring signals from the RSS. Party insiders reveal that Naidu has received assessments suggesting that a significant electoral setback could embolden the RSS to tighten its grip on the BJP organisation. Such a shift, they argue, could alter power equations within the NDA and change the style of leadership at the Centre — developments Naidu would prefer to anticipate rather than react to.
With Bihar’s first phase poised to set the tone for a fiercely contested election, Naidu’s attention underscores one key truth about Indian politics today: regional satraps are acutely aware that every state poll can reshape national power balances. As the ballot boxes open in Bihar, the political stakes extend far beyond its borders — reaching right into the corridors of Amaravati and Delhi alike.
