CJI SURYA KANT DECLARES THAT SC WILL OPEN EVEN AT MIDNIGHT

NEW DELHI: Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Wednesday declared that the Supreme Court doors will open even at the midnight under a new system to ensure the citizens get an immediate justice to their fundamental rights.

Introducing the new system, he said the complainants can come to the Supreme Court even at the midnight if they face legal emergency or agencies threaten them arrest.

The CJI said: “My efforts are to ensure the Supreme Court and the High Courts become the people’s court to ensure the complainants can contact them any time after the working hours.”

He said his priorities is to set up the constitution benches to tackle the pending petitions like the petitions challenging the legality of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) for the voters’ rolls that started from Bihar and now going on in a dozen states.

The Chief Justice also introduced a Special Operation protocol (SOP) under which time limits will be fixed for the lawyers in arguments and written submissions. He said this step will aim ease of the court working and speed up the arrangement for quick justice.

The SOP mandates that the advocates on record will submit the time to be taken by the senior lawyers and other lawyers at least a one day in advance using the online portal.

It further mandates that the lawyers will file a short note or written submissions not exceeding five pages to the opposite side. A circular signed by the top court’s four registrars mandates that all lawyers will strictly follow the time limit to complete their oral submissions.
