NEW DELHI,11 March 2026 : The second half of the Budget Session of Parliament began on a stormy note, with the Lok Sabha set to take up an opposition-backed resolution seeking the removal of Speaker Om Birla.
The ongoing conflict in West Asia is also likely to dominate the proceedings, with the Opposition criticising the government over its position on Iran and the US “waiver” on India’s purchase of Russian oil, among other issues.
Another issue expected to come up is the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in poll-bound West Bengal, which reportedly led to the deletion of nearly 60 lakh voters. The development is likely to trigger heated exchanges in Parliament.
The no-confidence resolution against Birla was submitted by several Opposition leaders, who alleged that he had acted in a “blatantly partisan” manner in the House. They also accused him of making false claims against Congress members when he referred to some “unexpected action” in the Lok Sabha and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to attend the House to reply to the debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address.
Following the submission of the notice, Birla recused himself from House proceedings. The Lok Sabha Secretariat said he would return only after the matter is decided.
Apart from the no-confidence motion, the US-Israel strikes on Iran and rising tensions in West Asia, which have disrupted crude oil supplies and pushed up prices, are also expected to be discussed during the session. The Opposition is likely to question the government’s policy on the issue.
Trinamool Congress MPs are also expected to raise the SIR issue in the House, while the BJP may bring up an alleged “protocol breach” involving President Droupadi Murmu during her visit to West Bengal on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the government is expected to introduce the Electricity Amendment Bill during the remaining part of the Budget Session, along with other pending legislative business from the first half of the session.
According to the agenda papers, the resolution against the Speaker is the only item listed for discussion in the Lok Sabha.
