NEW DELHI,16 Jan 2026 : Speculation over a possible defection spree gained momentum after the Bihar Congress hosted a ‘Dahi-chura’ party at its Sadaquat Ashram headquarters on the eve of Makar Sankranti, but noe of the six party MLAs attended the gathering.
Barely months after the end of the Bihar assembly elections, fresh political churn appears imminent in the state, with speculation rife over possible defections from both Congress and the NDA allies.
All six Congress MLAs in Bihar are in touch with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar-led JD(U), raising the possibility of a mass crossover. If the move materialises, the Congress, a key constituent of the RJD-led Opposition alliance, would be left without a single representative in the Assembly.
At the same time, the BJP, the single largest party in the state, is reportedly working to further consolidate its strength. According to media reports, three of the four MLAs of Upendra Kushwaha’s Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM), an NDA ally, have been in contact with BJP leaders, highlighting subtle power dynamics and an undercurrent of competition for dominance within the ruling coalition.
In the November 2025 Bihar elections, the NDA won 202 seats, with the BJP and JD(U) securing 89 and 85 seats, respectively. The Mahagathbandhan managed 35 seats, of which the RJD accounted for 25. The Congress won six of the 61 seats it contested.
