NEW DELHI,6 Jan 2026: Congress leader Sonia Gandhi was admitted to the hospital at 10 pm on Monday after pollution and cold in Delhi worsened her bronchial asthma, Dr Ajay Swaroop, Chairman, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital confirmed. He said her condition was completely stable.
He said that Sonia Gandhi was experiencing respiratory discomfort, adding that doctors, after carrying out a medical examination, found that her bronchial asthma was mildly exacerbated due to the combined effects of cold weather and pollution. “As a precautionary measure, she was admitted for further observation and treatment. At present, her condition is absolutely stable,” the doctor stated.
“She is responding well to treatment and is being managed with antibiotics and other supportive medications,” he said further. The decision regarding her discharge from the hospital will be taken by the treating physicians based on her clinical progress and is likely to happen in a day or two, Dr Swaroop said.
Sonia Gandhi is currently a Rajya Sabha Member (MP) representing Rajasthan, elected unopposed in early 2024 and taking oath in April 2024 for her first term in the Upper House, filling the seat vacated by former PM Manmohan Singh. She serves as the Chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party and continues her extensive career in Indian politics.
