FARMERS TO PROTEST IN DELHI ON TUESDAY

NEW DELHI: A large contingent of farmers from Punjab and other states are arriving in Delhi to join a mahapanchayat on July 21 against the proposed India-US trade deal.

The gathering will be held at Delhi’s Kisan Ghat s called by the Desh Bachao Morcha, with the organisers claiming around 550 farmers’ union and social organisations from across the country will take part.

Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Samiti leader Germanjit Singh Bandala told reporters in Beas that the proposed trade pact would advrsely hit the farmers, small traders and broader public.

He said the Modi government has ignored interests of India’s small and marginal farmers.

Bandala argued that the American agriculture operates on a much larger scale, with farms spread across thousahds of acres and backed by the government subsidy while most of the Indian farmers own only two to three acres of land and received far less finacial support.
