NEW DELHI: An elderly woman was killed in a road accident in Delhi on Saturday morning after a Mercedes-Benz collided with a WagonR, police said. The impact of the crash pushed the WagonR backwards into a stationary three-wheeler loading van, and the woman was caught between the vehicles and died on the spot.
The accident took place at around 8 am in front of Himalayas Apartment in the city’s Narela area. The deceased was identified as 70-year-old Urmila, a resident of Mamurpur.
Police said the Mercedes was being driven by a young man identified as Shubham. He was detained at the spot immediately after the accident.
Officials said Shubham’s father is a Sub-Inspector in the Haryana Police. Preliminary inquiry further revealed that the Mercedes did not belong to him and had been borrowed from a friend a day earlier.
According to the initial police inquiry, the Mercedes and the WagonR collided head-on. The force of the impact caused extensive damage to the front portions of both cars, while the three-wheeler loading van also suffered visible impact marks after being struck by the WagonR.
Visuals from the scene showed the Mercedes and WagonR standing damaged near the roadside, with crumpled body panels, broken parts and debris scattered around the point of impact.
Police personnel were seen inspecting the vehicles and documenting the scene as part of the investigation.
