NEW DELHI: The Uttarakhand High Court on Tuesday dismissed a public interest litigation seeking an independent probe into a “purification” ritual performed at a Haldwani venue after a rally by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge.
The PIL was filed by Baij Nath, a social activist and lawyer from the Dalit community.
A ‘shuddhikaran’ (purification) havan was conducted by a group (Shri Ram Sena Dharmarth Seva Nyas) at the Ramlila Ground in Haldwani on August 13, 2026, following Kharge’s public address. The petitioner alleged the ritual promoted caste discrimination and social enmity.
The High Court disposed of the petition after the state advocate general assured the bench that the police would conduct a fair and thorough investigation.
The state informed the court that zero First Information Reports (FIRs) registered in places like Bengaluru regarding the incident will be transferred to Haldwani for proper probe proceedings.
The government also assured the court that all relevant CCTV footage and electronic evidence concerning both Kharge’s rally and the subsequent ceremony would be preserved.
