New Delhi, 31 October—Mounting pressure on the Modi government, Congress president and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge today moved a resolution seeking “public impeachment” of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, levelling six major charges against him during a mock Parliament session.
Former Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar presided over the proceedings of the mock Parliament, which was also attended by several INDIA bloc MPs, including Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and others.
The proceedings, held at Kharge’s residence at 10, Rajaji Marg, are part of the Opposition’s campaign against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and alleged ‘vote chori’.
Representatives of several Opposition parties participated in the exercise, which has no constitutional authority to remove the CEC from office.
Introducing the resolution of impeachment, Kharge fired the salvo accusing CEC Kumar of treason and sought his removal from the office.
Citing a 2023 law that granted the CEC significant immunity from legal action, Kharge alleged that the Narendra Modi government’s decision was intended as a cover for the “criminal activities” committed by Kumar.
“It is clear that the lifelong legal protection provided to the Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah through this government in December 2023 was intended as a cover for the criminal activities enacted by him against the nation and the Constitution of India. Therefore, he must be removed forthwith,” Kharge said demanding that Gyanesh Kumar be tried for treason in a court of law.
“Members of Parliament of the INDIA alliance, representing over sixty per cent of the population of India, along with the citizens assembled in New Delhi on October 31, 2026, resolved that for this gross betrayal of the people of India, the Chief Election Commissioner, Mr Gyanesh Kumar, must be tried for treason in a court of law in accordance with the legal framework of the Constitution of India…,” Kharge added.
Levelling six major charges against CEC Kumar, Kharge accused him of a conspiracy to “steal elections” acting at the behest of PM Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
First charge is that Kumar conspired to steal elections, Kharge pointed out underling that 13.2 crore voters were deleted. Rewriting Form 6 without the approval of Parliament, Kumar seized the rolls through ECINET, the Congress chief underscored.
The last two charges deal with shutting out the other two commissioners and acting at the behest of Modi and Shah, Kharge said training guns at both the BJP led government and CEC
The mock Parliament and “public impeachment” of Gyanesh Kumar are part of the Congress-led INDIA bloc’s extensive protests against him over alleged “vote chori” and irregularities in the SIR exercise.
