New Delhi, Sept 18: The global success in addressing stratospheric ozone depletion must now be complemented by stronger efforts to tackle pollution and climate change in the troposphere, scientists and policy experts said at a national seminar held at Delhi Technological University (DTU).
The seminar, titled “Beyond the Shield: Bridging Ozone Recovery and Climate Action”, was organised by the Delhi-based Green Institute for Research and Development (GIRD) in academic partnership with DTU’s Department of Environmental Science and Engineering to mark World Ozone Day on September 16. The event was supported by the Ministry of Earth Sciences, according to a press release issued by GIRD.
The discussions focused on the continuing environmental challenges posed by rising emissions, unregulated pollutants and the links between ozone protection and climate change.
Speakers noted that implementation of the Montreal Protocol had helped the international community significantly reduce threats to the stratospheric ozone layer. However, they underlined the need to address pollution and climate-related challenges in the lower atmosphere alongside continued efforts to protect the ozone layer.
The India Cooling Action Plan (ICAP) also figured prominently in the discussions, with the seminar highlighting its role in promoting sustainable cooling, improving energy efficiency and encouraging the adoption of refrigerants with low global warming potential (GWP).
Dr Praveen Kumar, Director, Mission Mausam, Ministry of Earth Sciences, attended the seminar as chief guest and spoke on the interlinkages between ozone recovery, climate monitoring and the government’s Mission Mausam initiative.
The seminar brought together scientists, policy experts and scholars from across the country. Participants called for greater research, youth engagement and closer integration of environmental policies to align ozone protection with broader climate action and sustainable development goals.
