NEW DELHI: The Indian Youth Congress (IYC) has deleted a promotional video for its November 1 ‘Chalo Delhi’ rally in Ramlila Maidan after facing a backlash over footage that appeared to show a man secretly filming women on a street at night.
The post, captioned “Kinda chic tho??”, drew criticism for seemingly portraying the unwanted filming of women as something fashionable.
The 20-second video shows the man using his phone’s flashlight to film three women walking at night. He is then seen taking several pictures of them before scrolling through the images on his phone.
As he zooms in on a picture of one of the women, a poster for the Ramlila rally is visible on her phone.
When asked what message the video was intended to convey, IYC president Uday Bhanu did not offer a direct explanation, saying instead that stalking should not be encouraged.
Asked whether he had seen the video or approved its posting on social media, Bhanu said the content was handled by the organisation’s IT Cell and that it was not possible to approve every video posted online.
“It’s wrong to secretly film someone or take their pictures. We also want to know why the IT Cell posted this video,” he told India Today.
