EW DELHI: Former bureaucrat Ashish Joshi was picked up by the Delhi Police from Nehru Park after his morning walk. He later returned home. “Just got back home. Delhi Police Special Cell dropped me home. Details later,” he tweeted on Wednesday evening.
Later in the night, he took to Twitter again, claiming that he had been taken away for interrogation and that his repeated requests to inform his family about his whereabouts were met with a “following instructions” response. He tagged Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar in the post.
“Informing an individual’s family during interrogation or detention is a legal mandate, not an optional courtesy. Yesterday, I was taken for interrogation after my morning walk under the assurance that it would take very little time. However, as the hours stretched on, my repeated requests to inform my wife of my whereabouts ,the concerned Police Officials/Officer simply stated they were “following instructions.” I was only permitted to make a call at 6:38 PM, leaving my family & friends in total panic the entire day. I request that you issue clear instructions to all units directing officers to strictly uphold the legal duty of immediately informing the family of any person taken for interrogation , so that no citizen’s family has to endure the distress that mine suffered,” he tweeted.
However, Joshi did not reveal why he was picked up for questioning.
Earlier in the day, Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit claimed that Joshi was taken away by two Delhi Police constables from Nehru Park while he was out for his morning walk, and said his whereabouts were not known, reported PTI.
Delhi Police has not officially confirmed any detention or arrest of Joshi and has not issued a statement on Dikshit’s allegation.
Dikshit said Joshi, whom he described as a close friend and who retired as an additional secretary a few months ago, had called him in the morning, but he could not answer. He said that when he called back, Joshi’s phone was switched off, PTI reported.
In a video statement, Dikshit said an eyewitness who had been walking with Joshi told the family that two police personnel arrived and said they had to take him with them for questioning over a recent tweet.
According to Dikshit, the policemen told Joshi they were taking him to the Special Cell police station in New Friends Colony and made him sit in his own car.
Dikshit further claimed that Joshi’s car was later found parked at the New Friends Colony police station. “We sent people there, including lawyers, but nobody was ready to confirm where Joshi was,” he said.
