NEW DELHI: An earthquake measuring 5 on the Richter scale struck Tibet on Thursday, which came a week after the monster flash floods tore through the region bordering Nepal.
According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake was at a depth of 10 km.
There were no immediate reports of any damages or injuries.
The earthquake struck more than a week after the August 26 mega deluge, triggered by the collapse of a glacier in Tibet near the border with Nepal, tore through towns and valleys, leaving a trail of destruction and thousands dead or missing.
As of Thursday, at least 1,252 people have been confirmed dead and more than 4,200 remain missing in Nepal. Across the border, China has raised the death toll in Tibet to 21, while 541 people remain missing.
Since the disaster, China has reopened the road to Tibet’s Gyirong border crossing, which was destroyed by the wall of water and debris, allowing heavy machinery to reach the worst-hit areas for the first time.
Chinese state broadcaster CCTV showed excavators, rescue teams, sniffer dogs and life-detection equipment being deployed in a narrow mountain gorge where rain, unstable cliffs and a fast-flowing river have hampered rescue operations.
Rescuers have been carrying out deep searches around the inspection building, parking lots and dormitories in the flattened area, Tibet Daily reported, citing a government briefing.
