Book Review by Nikita Lakhera भारत में सड़क दुर्घटनाएँ From Bharat Mandapam
New Delhi – Road accidents have quietly become one of the biggest everyday tragedies in India. They do not just take lives, they leave behind broken families, long-term disability, financial loss and emotional trauma. Keeping this harsh reality in mind, a new Hindi book titled भारत में सड़क दुर्घटनाएँ was launched last Friday at the World Book Fair 2026, Bharat Mandapam (Pragati Maidan), New Delhi.
Published by the National Book Trust (NBT), the book is authored by Dr. B. K. S. Sanjay and Dr. Gaurav Sanjay, a father-son duo known for their contribution in the medical field, especially orthopaedics and trauma care. Dr. B. K. S. Sanjay is a renowned orthopaedic and spine surgeon, and his long years of experience in treating victims gives the book strong credibility. Instead of being a dry report full of numbers, the book carries the weight of real observations and practical learning from the ground.
The book launch was a meaningful event with the presence of several respected personalities. Justice (Retd.) Lokpal Singh, former judge of the Uttarakhand High Court, attended as the Chief Guest.
The programme also included dignitaries such as Prof. Milind Sudhakar Marathe (Chairman, NBT India), Shri Yuvraj Malik (Director, NBT India), Shri Kumar Vikram (Chief Editor & Joint Director) and Dr. Lalit Kishore Mandora (Editor/Coordinator).
Dr. B. K. S. Sanjay spoke passionately about the book’s main intention: to make readers rethink their daily choices behind the wheel. He emphasised that road safety is not just a personal obligation but a social responsibility that affects millions of relationships and futures. Using real examples such as the far-reaching impact when a bus meets with an accident or a young rider without a helmet suffers disabling injury he explained how reckless driving and negligence propagate suffering beyond the immediate victim.
In his address, the Chief Guest Justice (Retd.) Lokpal Singh spoke about how road accidents have become a serious and growing concern across the country. He referred to various recent major road accidents to highlight the scale of the problem, and said that such tragic incidents are now being reported even from places like Dehradun and other parts of Uttarakhand, where the situation has become alarming. He remarked that accident statistics can often feel like mere numbers, but भारत में सड़क दुर्घटनाएँ helps readers understand the real human impact behind them reminding us that every accident affects not only the victim, but an entire family and community. He also appreciated the authors for presenting the subject in a clear and accessible manner for both general readers and professionals.
While addressing the audience, Shri Yuvraj Malik (Director) began by pointing out that the title भारत में सड़क दुर्घटनाएँ may sound very simple at first glance, but the subject it deals with is extremely essential and urgent for society today. He noted that road accidents affect not just individuals but entire families, and therefore awareness and responsible behaviour on roads is the need of the hour. He appreciated the authors for choosing such a socially relevant theme and presenting it in a reader-friendly manner.
Structured with clarity and depth, the book goes beyond statistics to explore behavioural, legal, environmental and psychological reasons behind road accidents. Chapters detail causes like drunk driving, fatigue, mobile phone use, speeding and infrastructure issues. Later sections highlight emotional, financial and societal repercussions of traffic collisions, offering readers both sobering facts and constructive suggestions. The inclusion of case stories makes the narrative relatable and grounding. भारत में सड़क दुर्घटनाएँ does not simply inform, it motivates.
This book fills a gap in Indian literature on road safety. Unlike technical manuals or government reports, it speaks directly to citizens, drivers, passengers, families and youth, encouraging them to adopt safer habits and rally for systemic change.
In a country where road accidents take thousands of lives annually, this book stands as a timely call to awareness, action and collective responsibility.
