NEW DELHI: Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party scored a significant win in Varanasi, the constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections. The Samajwadi Party retained the Varanasi Teachers’ MLC seat and is set for a decisive victory in the Varanasi Graduates’ constituency.
The SP also won the Agra Teachers’ constituency, even though the BJP had the overall edge, winning five seats and leading in one.
The BJP won the Lucknow Teachers’, Meerut-Saharanpur Teachers’, Bareilly-Moradabad Teachers’, and Meerut-Saharanpur Graduates’ constituencies, along with one other seat. Elections were held for 11 UP Legislative Council seats, with the results being viewed as a critical barometer for political parties ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
Now, you must be wondering what are graduates’ and teachers’ constituencies? These constituencies exist in states that have a legislature with two houses – the assembly and the council.
At the time of the drafting of the Constitution, there was a feeling that having some members of the Council elected only by the educated would help reduce the effects of caste, religion, money or muscle power.
