NEW DELHI: Who will be the next President of India after the term of president Droupadi Murmu ends in July next year.
Two names are in consideration: Narendra Modi and Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla.
Birla who remains a confidante of the Prime Minister, remained non controversial in last 12 years.Although, the Opposition members had moved a no confidence motion against him unsuccessfully, his relations with Opposition members remained cordial so far. This is perhaps due to his attempts to accommodate every member to raise issues on the floor.
Modi’s choice for the top post has always been unpredictable and out of the box . A senior Minister and a heavy weight BJP leader had suggested the name of Mr L K Advani to succeed Pranab Mukherjee but Modi preferred Ramnath Kovind, lesser known BJP leader in Uttar Pradesh.
If Modi decides to be himself the President of India, then questions come on who will succeed him as the prime minister. His close aide Amit Shah, the home minister, is no longer his preferred choice because of actions against the generation next. Modi was banking on this generation, but Shah has spoiled his support.
The role of the RSS may come into play and two names for the prime ministership are two Nagpur guys close to the RSS, namely Union Transport minister Nitin Gadkari and Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis.
All these names are only speculative as PM Modi has not yet opened his cards as to whether he would make his successor the next year amid the Assembly elections in seven states after seeing how the BJP fares.
