NEW DELHI,16 April 2026 : Lok Sabha opposition leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday pressed for delimitation based on 2026 caste census and not on the old data in which the Other Backward Castes (OBCs) will be denied their share.
He told reporters in the Parliament House premises that the Congress will fully back the government to pass the women’s reservation bill, but it will oppose attempts being made to deny the rights to the backward classes, southern states and small states including Northeastern states.
Rahul explained that the government is harping on the 2011 census which does not have at all the data of the OBCs and that will deny them a say in the Lok Sabha and the Assemblies. He said the OBCs account for 50% share in the population and they must get their share.
He asked why the women’s bill is not passed with the new census which gives correct picture of the OBCs. He said PM Modi, RSS and BJP are frightened from the new data of the caste census which will ensure right share to the OBCs.
The Congress leader said his party is fully interested in implementing the women’s reservation but it should ensure right to OBC, Dalit and Adivasi women. He said the Prime Minister is dishonest in enforcing women’s reservation on the basis of the new caste census instead pf using the 2011 census in which there are no numbers of the backward classes.
