NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday claimed that he had completed 12 years at the helm of the Indian government, marking a political journey that has reshaped the country’s electoral and governance landscape.
He is, however, not yet the longest serving PM as Jawaharlal Nehru was there for nearly 17 years and Indira Gandhi for 15 years and 10 months. He, however, held the executive office for the longest period, including over 12 years as the Gujarat Chief Minister.
From his first swearing-in ceremony in 2014 to securing back-to-back mandates in 2019 and a historic third consecutive term in 2024, Modi has emerged as one of India’s longest-serving leaders. His tenure spans more than 18 years in executive office, including 12 years as Gujarat Chief Minister and over 4,400 days as Prime Minister.
The Modi years have also been marked by a series of high-profile infrastructure and nation-building projects, including the new Parliament building, Central Vista redevelopment, Kartavya Path, Vande Bharat trains, the Statue of Unity, INS Vikrant, the Kashmir rail link, Noida International Airport, Namo Bharat RRTS and the Ganga Expressway.
This report looks back at the numbers, milestones and signature projects that have come to define the Modi era.
In a message posted on social media, the Prime Minister said the past 12 years have been dedicated to trust, development and public welfare. Highlighting achievements ranging from infrastructure expansion and digital transformation to welfare initiatives for farmers, women and youth, Modi said the government’s focus remains on building a developed India by 2047.
The milestone comes as the BJP-led government enters its third consecutive term under Modi’s leadership. Supporters point to major achievements in infrastructure, digital governance, welfare delivery and India’s global standing, while critics continue to raise questions over unemployment, economic challenges and governance issues.
