Rahul Gandhi Raises Concerns Over Great Nicobar Project During Andaman Visit

New Delhi, June 5: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has raised concerns about the Centre’s proposed Great Nicobar Development Project after visiting the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

On World Environment Day, Gandhi shared a video from his visit to Great Nicobar Island. The video showed him exploring the island’s natural beauty, including its forests and coral reefs. He said the island is one of India’s most important ecological regions and needs protection.

Rahul Gandhi claimed that the proposed development project could cause serious damage to the environment. According to him, large numbers of trees may be cut down and fragile coral reefs could be affected. He also expressed concern about the impact on local communities and indigenous tribes living in the region.

While Gandhi said he supports projects related to national security and defence, he argued that development should not come at the cost of environmental destruction. He called for a balance between economic growth and conservation.

The Great Nicobar Project is one of the government’s major infrastructure plans. It includes a transshipment port, an airport, power facilities and other infrastructure aimed at boosting economic activity and strengthening India’s strategic presence in the Indian Ocean region.

The Central government has defended the project, saying it is important for national security, trade and regional development. Officials have also stated that environmental safeguards are being put in place and that necessary clearances have been obtained.

The project has sparked a wider debate across the country. Supporters believe it will bring jobs, investment and strategic benefits, while critics fear it could harm one of India’s richest ecosystems.

As discussions continue, the future of the Great Nicobar Project remains a key issue at the intersection of development, environmental protection and national security.
